Gambia Departs for England

The cruiser Gambia, which has been on loan to the Royal New Zealand Navy for more than two years, took her final departure from Auckland yesterday, en route to England, where she will revert to the Royal Navy. Another naval 'ailing this morning was the American cruiser Vincennes for Noumea. —P.A. Novel School Bath When the Makaraka School Committee undertook the dismantling of the air-raid shelters built in the school grounds during the war crisis of 194243 it salvaged the timber with which the structure was buil.t and converted .the shelter into a pool in which the pupils of the school receive tuition in swimming. The pool has ample length —about 100 ft—but lacks width, being confined to the 4ft Oin span on which the lower concrete portion of the shelter was built. Since the water shortage developed this summer the committee has planned to sink a bore near the pool to provide an independent water supply and a subsidy for that purpose has been sought from the Hawke’s Bay Education Board. A concrete surround and wire-mesh fence protects the pool from pollution, and an electric pump discharges the water when changes are possible. The timber salvaged from the air-raid shelter has furnished the material for a dress-ing-shed, and a considerable sum has been spent in completion of the work.
