£IO,OOO STATE GRANT

RED CROSS TRANSPORT

(P.A.) AUCKLAND, Feb. 12. When advised of the Government’s £IO,OOO grant to. the New Zealand Red Cross Society for distribution among Red Cross transport drivers, the Auckland Corps held a general meeting and unanimously decided that their share would be donated by them to the Auckland centre to enable the Auckland Red Cross transport to purchase and drive its own vehicles for the benefit of disabled ex-servicemen and civilian organisations in peace-time. The Auckland Corps has covered approximately 30.000 miles a month of the Dominion total monthly mileage of 65.000. -

An Auckland official said that if the Government’s £IO,OOO was divided on a mileage basis Auckland would be entitled to nearly £4600. The members were resolved that as they joined to do a voluntary war job without reward, their individual acceptance of any monetary compensation at this stage was entirely out of the question. No decision on the question of the Government's £IO,OOO grant has yet been made by the Gisborne branch of the Red Cross Women’s Transport Service. The matter is to be discussed at a meeting of the branch committee this week.
