HASTINGS’ DRY SPELL

RAIN BADLY NEEDED ,

1.1 1 IN. SINCE OCTOBER

(P.A.) HASTINGS, Feb. 1. Only 1:11 in. of rain has fallen in Hastings in the past three months, compared with an average fall for November. December and January, taken over a 22-year period, of 5.44 in. The 1945 rainfall was 22in., almost lOin. below the average of 31.13 in. A really good fall of rain has not been recorded since the end of October, when 1.64 in. of the month's total of 2.21 in. fell on two days. The rain that has fallen since then has been mainly in isolated showers. Fine, sunny days and high drying winds have robbed the countryside of any benefit it might have derived.
