BRITISH DIRECTOR PROFESSOR COCKROFT LORD PORTAL’S POST LONDON, Jan. 29. The Prime Minister, Mr. C. R. Attlee, announced in the House of Commons that Marshal of the Royal Air Force. Lord Portal of Hungerford, would head
the organisation within the Ministry of Supply to provide material for development of British research into atomic energy. . „ , The distinguished scientist., Professor J. E. Cockroft, has been appointed director of the atomic research and experimental station near Didcot, for which Lord Portal’s organisation would supp'v the material as soon as possible to enable Britain to take advantake of the developments as they occurred. Mr. Attlee pointed out that the choice of the head of the supply organisation was a matter of supreme importance. The Government * was fortunate to secure Lord Portal’s services. Professor Cockroft was at present director of the Canadian atomic energy plant and would remain there temporarily unttl the Canadian authorities were able to apopint a successor.
