DRILL HALL WOOL

REMOVAL SOUGHT USE FOR FIRE CONFERENCE In accordance with a decision reached at last evening’s meeting of the Gisborne Chamber of Commerce, .that body will ehdeavour to secure the use of the Drill Hall for the annual fire brigades’ conference. In bringing the matter forward, Mr. R. G. Clare said that one of the biggest obstacles which confronted the local organising committees was hall accommodation for social activities. There was none big enough available in town. He suggested that the chamber might be able to assist by making representations to the Woolbrokers' Association regarding the possible clearance of wool from the Drill Hall.

Mr. H. C. Hanes stated that the wool had been stored in the Drill Hall at the instigation of the export branch of the Internal Marketing Division, not the Woolbrokers’ Association.

Two hundred bales had been taken out recently, but he knew of no other storage space where the remaining bales could go. Shipments might take the wool, but it was impossible to store it at the' gaol shed as it only just fulfilled the present requirements. The newly-elected president, Mr. T. A. N. Corson, declared that the chamber had given its support to the coming conference in Gisborne and was anxious to help in any Avay possible. The secretary, Mr. M. J. White, said that it might be possible to obtain the use of the Opera House. He understood the seats could be taken out and any social function might be held there.

Mr. L. Miles suggested that the Gisborne branch of the New Zealand Woolbrokers’ Association be approached to endeavour to obtain the use of the Drill Hall. The branch then could communicate through its parent body with the Internal Marketing Division regarding the removal of the wool in the Drill Hall. A motion covering this was put by Mr. Miles and was given unanimous support.
