Freezing Workers’ Hours
With the flush period of the lambkilling season being hastened by the dry spell, a 44-hour week is being worked by .slaughtermen and other freezing workers at Westfield and Southdown. Although the 40-hodr week applies to the freezing industry, the men have agreed to turn out on Saturday mornings during the peak period on the understanding that the working week would be discussed at conferences between employers arid union representatives in Wellington. Overtime rates at time and a-half are paid for the hours worked on Saturdays. Greek Jews’ Estates The Greek Government has decided to waive its rights regarding the property of Greek Jews who died after being deported by the Germans and left no heirs. Such property, instead of reverting to the State, will be handed over to a special trust fund which the Government is establishing for the welfare of the remaining Jewish communities
