MAY BE CROWN COLONY

NEGOTIATIONS PROCEED (9.30 a.m.) LONDON, Jan. 20.

Sarawak is to become part of the British Empire. An agreement has been reached between Sir Charles Brooke and the Colonial Office, says the Daily Herald, whereby the State is to become a Crown Colony. Sir Charles Brooke will retain his title until his death but a British ResidentGeneral will probaby be appointed to handle the country’s affairs.

The Press Association’s diplomatic correspondent, says the announcement that Sarawak is to become part of the British Empire is described as a little premature. Discussions regarding Sarawak's future status continue between representatives of the British and Sarawak Governments.
