5000GN. FEE REFUSED

ENGLISH BARRISTER

NAZI LEADER'S DEFENCE (9.30 a.m.) LONDON. Jan. 20.

A London barrister refused a 5000 guinea fee to defend one of the Nuremberg prisoners, said the AttorneyGeneral, Sir Hartley Shawcross, at the annual meeting of the Bar. The offer was not made by a prisoner but by a friend in Britain without the prisoner's knowledge. Sir Hartley Shawcross, who is one of the Nuremberg prosecutors, said the barrister immediately informed him of the offer saying that he thought it would be quite improper to accept it Sir Hartley Shawcross said he wholeheartedly ' agreed and summoned a special meeting of the Bar Council which ruled that it was undesirable that a member of the English Bar should defend any of the Nuremberg war criminals.
