DE GAULLE’S DRAMATIC MOVE
REPORTED RESIGNATION OF POST
WALKED OUT OF CABINET MEETING (By Telegraph—Press Assn—Copyright.) (10.30 a.m.) LONDON, Jan 20. General de Gaulle, President of France, is reported to have resigned, it is definitely understood by correspondents in- Paris, although there has been no official announcement as yet. Once again a political crisis has flared up in France, and this time more serious than any other. General de Gaulle s resignation is said to be contained in a formal letter to the President of the National Assembly. . .. . General de Gaulle this morning called a meeting of the Cabinet and a few moments after his Ministers had assembled the general walked in. After speaking heatedly for about five minutesi he •said: “Good-day to you,” and stalked out of the Cabinet Chamber, leaving the Cabinet members sitting stunned and speechless behind him What General de Gaulle did have to say is not exactly known, though correspondents say there can be several causes of the bombshell It has been stated that General de Gaulle accused his Cabinet of lack of unity and of political malingering. Then there is the Communist Party’s demand for a two-party Government, consisting of the Communists and Socialists, the food mobt , in which everybody is blaming everybody else upon the lack control; the political influence on the army. This afternoon the three major political parties held meeting in an endeavour to effect an llth-honr solution The various representatives to *ie UNO have flown home to take part m their respective parties’ conferences. General de Gaulle is to broadcast to the nation to-morrow.
