MINISTER CONFIDENT
JOBS IN OTHER AREAS..?.
Confidence in New Zealand’s ability to absorb into industry the large number of servicemen returning from overseas and being discharged in that Dominion was expressed by the Mifi'-jJ ister of Rehabilitation. Mr. C. Fi 1 Skinner, in an interview before his departure from Gisborne for Wellington on Saturday afternoon.
The Minister said that approximately 1-1,000 men would return to New Zealand this month, and others were on their way. The only sizable group remaining overseas was J Force, which was destined for Japan. “There is bound to be a certain amount of seasonal unemployment, which occurs in normal times at certain periods of the year, but these workers can be absorbed,” said the Minister. “Vou have had this experience in Gisborne.
“The Government has plans which will be put into effect as soon as unemployment occurs. These plans are designed to ensure continuity of employment. They consist of an extensive works programme covering the whole of Now Zealand.
“The Government has undertaken to pay men when they are out of work, and they will be expected to take work when it is found for them. This mav mean moving to other districts, if sufficient work cannot he found in their home district, but this rannot' be avoided. This is a position which these workers must accept.”
