DANGER OF FIRE
WAINUI PLANTATION WARDEN APPOINTED Because of the danger of fire, especially in dry weather, the Cook County Council decided at its meeting to-day to accept an offer by Mr. J. Carrington-Wellby to act as honorary fire warden of the plantation at Okitu, Wainui Beach. Mr. Wellby, in a letter lo the council, said he was concerned at the fire risk to the plantation and, having retired, would have time to act as an honorary fire warden. "I think this is a gesture of public spiritedness on the part of this gentleman,” said the chairman, Mr. E. PI. Baker. “Under present conditions there is undoubtedly a very serious risk of fire in that area, and there are some valuable trees there. It would be a pity if a fire were to cause damage.” Mr. R. Graham: We can get the fire brigade out there. He should be told of this in case it is required. He may not know ot this arrangement. Members thanked Mr. Wellby for the offer of his services.
