ESCAPE FROM CUSTODY

AUCKLAND PRISONER WARDER ELUDED (P A.) AUCKLAND, Jan. 17. An inmate of Auckland Prison escaped from the custody of a warder yesterday morning when he was being escorted on loot to the Auckland Hospital to receive treatment. The prisoner was Richard Arthur de Thierry, aged 32, a half-caste. Despite a widespread search by the police and warders, he was still at large at a late hour last night. The prisoner and warder left the gaol at about 10.30 a.m. to go to the Auckland Hospital, where de Thierry was to be given out-patient treatment for an injury to his left hand. The prisoner made his escape before the hospital was reached. »♦ is known that de Thierry entered a small house in the city. A few seconds later he dashed out of the back door and after climbing a fence disappeared. Two police constables arrived at the house shortly after the incident and, together with the warciei, who was already on the scene, they made inquiries among the people m .the house. A search was then. made of the surrounding area and this was extended to several localities during the day and continued last night.
