THEFT CHARGES
PROBATION FOR TWO MEN A plea of not guilty was entered by Raymond Joseph Higgins in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday to a charge of stealing rifle ammunition valued at £4 18s.
Defendant said he had found the ammunition on the roadside in an unnamed box. He watched out for an advertisement of its loss, but saw none. The magistrate, Mr. E. L. Walton, said that if a person converted an article to his own use, it was the same as theft. The correct course upon finding an article was to report it or leave it with the police. The charge, however, had been proved because the defendant admitted that he had gained possession of the ammunition and had sold it.
The defendant was placed on probation for six months.
Charged with the theft of a theodolite, valued at £ls, James Gordon, for whom Mr. Woodward appeared, was placed on probation for 12 months..
