HIGHEST SINCE 1925
BRITISH BIRTHRATE T.B. DEATHS LOWEST YET SOCIAL DISEASE CASES (10 a.m.) LONDON. Dec. 18. The Ministry of Health’s report for the year ended March 31 records the highest birth-rate since 1925. The mortality rate for mothers'in childbirth and babies in the first months was the lowest ever reported. The total births. 744,843, included an increased illegitimacy rate of 72 per 1000. The tuberculosis notifications were well above the pre-war rate, but the deaths from tuberculosis were the lowest recorded—24,l63. The figures for venereal disease showed a slight improvement compared with the first war years, but the rate for females continued to rise, although less rapidly. The Minister of Health, Mr. Aneurin Bevan, said: “We should be able to progress much more quickly in peace-time. Britain is still a long way from being a really healthy nation.”
