LIVESTOCK SALES
WAIKATO MARKETS
Saleyard business in the Waikato is quiet at present, being confined mainly to fat stock and boner cows. This is not unusual from the middle of December until the sheep fairs commence, hut owing to the dry weather the quiet period set in earlier this year. Fat stock buyers are experiencing a busy time drafting lambs. On account of feed conditions many graziers are forwarding their iambs to the works earlier than usual.
Station-bred cattle are being penned in small numbers, but there is little inquiry and sales are hard to effect. Yearling Jersey heifers are also coming forward in small lots and inferior lines are difficult to quit. Only odd pens of dairy cattle comprising late calvers arc coming on to the market and these sell at recently-reduced rates. Boner cows are offering in more than average numbers for this time of the year and continue, to meet a ready sale at firm quotations. In the store sheep section yardings still comprise mainly hoggets, while the demand for these has slackened considerably a few sales are being made. At the central yards two-tooth ewes from the East Coast sold from 26s to 26s Id and well-grown wether hoggets to 23s 6d.
