DEFECTIVE EYESIGHT
CLARKE QUITTING RING TRIBUTE TO MURPHY (P.A.I WELLINGTON. Dec. 19. “I have quit the ring I have fought, my last fight and am leaving for Sydney on Sunday," ' said Bobby Clarke, the Australian middleweight, boxer, who was defeated by Bos Murphy on Moondny night. In making this announcement yesterday, he said he was making no excuses for his defeat and considered Murphy a prrancl fighter, but he had reluctantly come to the decision because of defective eyesight. His trainer. Pat Connors, said Clarke had .suffered from desert blindness contracted when with the R.A.A.F. in Egypt in 1940. He had worn glasses after his discharge but had later discarded them. The trouble did not affect him in the day hut it was clear that he was not measuring his distances under the glare of the ring lights.
