HASTINGS VANDALISM

EXPLOSIVE CHARGES USED Extensive damage to residential letter-boxes in Tomoana road, Hastings, is believed by the police to have been caused by explosives placed in the boxes by youths. Several residents who were alarmed by loud explosions later found that their letter-boxes had been shattered It is thought that the explosive charges were taken from .303 rifle bullets and fitted with a fuse. The charge had a powerful effect in the confined space of a letter-box in one instance, an ornamental concrete letter-box was destroyed, a piece of concrete striking a nearby house with considerable force.

A police officer said that this kind of vandalism was particularly dangerous for the person who perpetrated it. Loss of fingers and even limbs commonly resulted from youths handling such explosives.
