Ravages of Opossums

Apparently it is difficult to convince some people in official positions tha. opossums are anything more than an interesting and quaint element in the wild life of the country. The Now Zealand Farmers’ Union has been working to secure the removal of restrictions from the killing of opossums, and has found it necessary to mobilise farmer-opinion in support of the effort. In the Gisborne-East Coast areas, where native bush has been badly damaged by the introduced pest and country gardens, orchards, and tree plantations suffer severe depredations, it should not be difficult to secure ample evidence of the need for a swift diminution in their numbers. There is a general objection, on humanitarian grounds, to the poisoning of animals, but the pest has now become so widespread in the district that trapping and shooting are no longer making substantial inroads upon their colonies.
