BIRD FROM AUSTRALIA

A strange bird seen near the wireless station on the southern side of the Hokitika River has been identified as a rare visitor, a spur-winged plover, an Australian bird. Dr. W. McKay. Greymouth, recently secured a view of the bird close enough to identify it. About half the size of a native pigeon, the spur-winged plover has a black poll with yellow face and a yellow over-mask, and a spur on each shoulder for combat. It lives in estuaries and seashore lagoons and is well known in various Australian States. It has rarely been seen in New Zealand and as far as is known there have been only three previous reported instances of visits. According to records the spurwinged plover was first seen on one occasion at Wanganui almost 20 years ago, and before that in the South Island, also at Flokitika, about 50 years ago.
