WEEK’S DELAY NOW
NETHERLANDS VESSEL BALLAST PROBLEM (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Oct. 24. Though officially none of the parties concerned in the dispute over the loading of the Netherlands vessel Alcinous bad any development to report yesterday, the crew gave ample evidence of the Dutch authorities’ determination to get their ship away. The waterside workers refused to load ballast into the ship, but efforts were being made yesterday by the officers and men of the Alcinous to cope with the ballast problem for themselves.
Heavy works associated with the wartime armaments of the ship were removed from the higher parts of the vessel and cargo was transferred to the lower hold, all with the apparent purpose of adjusting the ballast and hastening the ship’s departure from New Zealand.
The dismantling of the armaments will take more time yet, and it remains to be seen whether the removal of their considerable weight will have sufficient effect, together with other adjustments, to enable the master to take his ship on its journey to Java. The Alcinous has been delayed for more than a week in Wellington.
