“ABSOLUTE WASH-OUT”
MILK ZONING COMMITTEE MEMBER’S VIEWS Describing the Milk Zoning Committee as “the most useless committee I have ever been on,” Mr, H. H, De Costa, Deputy-Mayor, at last night's meeting of the Gisborne Borough Council, tendered his resignation as one of the two council representatives on that committee. The personnel of the committee, which was set up about two years ago, is: Messrs. DeCosta, M. J. White, Gisborne Borough Council, and Mr. J. McCallum. milk vendors. The committee rarely met and was an absolute wash-out, Mr. DeCosta declared. Milk vendors went ahead
and did what they thought right without consulting the committee. He did not think it was worth while serving on, and Mr. White, who was the chairman, had expressed the same views to him. Dr. A. L. Singer: Whose authority is it to see that the committee functions? Mr. DeCosta: The chairman is responsible for calling meetings, but no meetings are called for there is never any need for them. Dr. Singer: What are the functions of the committee? “Supervise the vendors, inquire into complaints, and handle matters relating to tyres.” Mr. DeCosta replied. He said milk businesses were changing hands and the committee was never notified and for all the use it was it need not be there. The council decided to defer acceptance of the resignation until next meeting so that it could hear Mr. White’s views on the matter.
