CIVIL AIRCRAFT
BRITISH MACHINES SUPERB TYPES COMING (P.A.) WELLINGTON. Oct. 23. Developments in civil aviation were discussed by Mr. J. Dobson, of the A. V. Roe Company, builders of the Avro aircraft, who said that if operators could resist the temptation to purchase American aircraft for their immediate post-war services Britain would be able to make up the leeway she lost through concentration on military types and within the next few years would offer to the world a superb assortment of civil machines suitable for any type of service. If, on the other hand, this initial encouragement was not given to the industry, it might go into the doldrums and British manufacturers, through lack of orders, might never have the opportunity of playing their full part in the development of post-war air transport throughout the world. Mr. Dobson, who has been acting as technical adviser to the Australian Government in the building of the Avro-Lincoln in Australia, is spending a brief period in New Zealand before returning to England, where he will collect information concerning the building of the Avro Tudor 2. the construction of which will be undertaken shortly by the Australian Government. He said that when Britain got down to specific jobs in the civil aircraft industry it would be found that she also could turn out the goods. Many civil aircraft for all purposes were on the way.
