OBITUARY
MR. HARRY EDNEY An old and wall-known identity of this district, Mr. Harry Edney, died on Monday following a stroke. His health had been declining gradually during the past year. _ . Fifty years’ association with this district was ended by the death of Mr. Edney. Born in Farcham, Portsmouth, he came to New Zealand in his early twenties and remained for a short while at Auckland. ‘He later removed io Gisborne on horseback and became associated with many of the country areas before going into business in town. Upon his arrival in the district he commenced a carrying business, using packhorses and travelling about the country transporting supplies and implements to the settlers in the Te Karaka. Wae-renga-a-hika, Mangapoike and Waimata districts.
He spent many years in the Waimata district and met and married there in 1919. Eight years later Mr. Edney disposed of his packhorses and took over a small store in Derby street. He retired from business in January of last year owing to ill health. His wife died in August of last year and Mr. Edney’s health has gradually declined. His many friends will regret his passing. He is survived by two step-sons, Mr. A. Hunt, Whatatutu, and Mr. W. Hunt, Wairoa, and three step-daughters, Mrs. C. Verdon, London, Mrs. E. Smith, Gisborne, and Mrs. R. Hollarnby, Haiti. The interment took place at the Taruheru cemetery this morning.
