UNION PRESSURE
SHIFT-MEN'S HOURS
ISSUE NOT SETTLED
POWER-HOUSE DEMANDS
SYDNEY, Oct. 20.
Union officials fear that the settlement of the Bunnerong dispute will not fast, because no settlement of the shiftwork problem which caused the strike has been found.
A meeting of the power-house enginedrivers, who arc key men in the works, agreed to resume work only under protest The engine-drivers issued what in effect is an ultimatum to the Federal Government, demanding the. introduction by November 30 of legislation to provide that shift-men will work four hours less per week than day workers. They also demanded that the inquiry into shift-work ordered by the Prime Minister, Mr. J. B. Chifley. should be made by a Royal Commission and not by an Arbitration Court judge. If these demands are not met. and the enginedrivers strike again, Bunnerong powerhouse will automatically become idle.
