NEWS OF THE DAY

Pacific Cargo Trade /. A ; The Union Steam Ship,' Company announces that- arrangements have been made for the re-entry of British vessels into the cargo trade between New Zealand and the West Coast of U.S.A. Commencing in November, monthly sailings both north and south will be resumed by vessels operated by the British Ministry of War Transport under "the agency of the Union Company, in recognition of their longestablished operation in the Pacific trade.

Hospital Staff Training Proposals for the introduction of an educational and training scheme for the administrative staffs of public hospitals in New Zealand with the diploma of hospital management as the ultimate objective, have been initiated by the conference of hospital board secretaries now being held in Palmerston North. It is the first such conference to be held since before the war, and is being attended by 48 delegates representing hospitals in both the North and South Islands and the Health Department. Motor Accidents During September Twelve deaths occurred during September through accidents involving motor-vehicles, according to the reports received by the Transport Department. Eight of the victims were occupants of motor-vehicles at the time of the accident, another was riding a motor cycle, while two bicycle riders and a pedestrian were also killed. Five of the accidents (involving six fatalities) happened in the North Island, and six occurred in the South Island. Until the end of September 100 fatalities had been recorded since the beginning of the year. During the first nine months of 1944 there were 101 road deaths.

Napier Harbour Finances

“The report is full of achievement and good tidings,” said Mr. F. B. Logan at the annual meeting of the Napier Harbour Board. “We have a credit balance ot £14,713, as compared with a debit balance of over £IO,OOO before the war. The report refers to the end of the dredging, which we hope will be for all time,” said Mr. Logan. “It refers to increases in trade, lands for the future development of Napier, and completion of the construction policy of the board. The beard has justified itself in the eyes of ratepayers when in 1934 they entrusted it' to carry out a harbour development scheme. Of the major problems which remain the most important is future development of the harbour, which we have agreed must go further than the board’s policy of 1934.”
