SANK IN 30 MINUTES

CRUISER PERTH’S FATE HOUSTON OVERWHELMED (10 a.m.) TOKIO, Sept. 3. The Australian cruiser Perth was hit and sank in 20 minutes in the Java Sea according to a survivor of the American cruiser Houston, Commander Arthur Mayer, who attended the Japanese surrender ceremony after his release from a prison camp in the Tokio area. He said the Houston fought on alone against five cruisers and nine destroyers. He was brought to Japan for questioning to which he was subjected for 18 months. They tortured the prisoners but only a few men broke down.
