“THE TORY WOLF”

MR FRASER’S CHARGE MR HOLLAND AMUSED NATIONALISTS’ POLICY (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Sept. 4. “It is somewhat amusing to read the Prime Minister’s statement about the Tory wolf having donned Labour’s clothes and lying in the Labour bed,” said the Leader of the Opposition, Mr. S. G. Holland, yesterday. “For a long time they used to allege that we had no policy at all save that we would cut wages and pensions. As no one believed that charge, Mr. Fraser and his friends now allege that we have stolen their policy, donned their clothes and are lying in Labour’s bed. That statement in Christchurch will deceive but very few. “Fortunately the radio enables the people of New Zealand to hear the very strong case the Parliamentary Opposition consistently puts forward in defence of the personal rights of the individual and its advocacy of higher living standards by increasing the supply of goods from which all people must draw their supplies.

“Spirit of the British Lion”

“Far from being the wolf lying down, the National Party to-day typifies the spirit of the British lion standing foursquare in the path of the growing dictatorship in New Zealand. It is true that there are differences between the two parties. The Labour Party appears to believe conscientiously in State control here, there and everywhere so as to hasten the day of socialisation of the means of production, distribution and exchange. Hence all these restrictions and regulations and all this loss of personal freedom for the people. “The National Party is equally conscientious in its belief that the people are heartily tired of rising costs, regimentation, restrictions, shortages, licenses, permits and the filling in of forms, and that a steadily growing number of people are looking for a change. It is the party that will allow people to have the freedom our servicemen and women have fought for, the party that will reduce living costs .by lowering taxation and restore to the people their right to live their own lives without dictation from the. State. “Mr. Fraser can call us Tories or what he likes. We are out for the welfare of the people, and when our opponents have to resort to calling us names, that is the surest indication that we are making progress Mr. Fraser is apparently still suffering from the effects of Awarua, Hamilton and Dunedin North.”
