MARKED DECREASE
THIS YEAR’S RAINFALL GISBORNE FIGURES Up to the end of last month the rainfall registered at Gisborne this year was over 18in less than that recorded in the corresponding period of 1944. With only one exception, each of the eight months so far this year has yeilded less rain than the average fall for the individual months. A total of 39.CCin fell during the first two-thirds of 1944, whereas this year’s figure for the similar period was 20.74 in. The average recordings for these months: totalled 33.53 in. On the 10 wet days last month 1.63 in of rain was registered, compared with 3.27 in in 1944 and the average of 4.27 in. The recording last month was the smallest since 1939, when 1.50 in fell on 11 days, and was the third lowest fall this year. February was the only month this year with a fall in excess of the average, the fall being 3.65 in and the average 4.91 in. Monthly totals of the first eight months of this, last, and the previous year, together with the corresponding averages were:—
The falls were on the following days last month: August 1, ,05in; August 6, ,02in; August 14, ,15in; August 15, ,43in; August 16, ,36in; August 19, ,07in; August 21, ,06in; August 27, ,30in; August 28, .Olin; August 30, ,18in. The hours of bright sunshine recorded last month totalled 146.1.
