AMERICAN AIR FORCES VICTORY COSTS IN EUROPE WASHINGTON, Aug. 31. The American Army Air Force spokesman said that between 27 and 80 per cent, of all army planes overseas on V.E-Day in Europe and V.P.Day in the Pacific will be scrapped. It is estimated that 26,000 planes of no further use to the army will be scrapped or abandoned. On V.E-Day 32,000 planes were abroad or en route tor foreign bases. The Army Air Force strength on V.P-Day was 64,491 planes. The Associated Press aviation correspondent • said that victory in Europe cost the Army Air Force 33,185 airmen killed and missing, and 18,418 planes.
