BACKING PROMISED

MINE NATIONALISATION (11 a.m.) LONDON, Aug. 24. Outlining his attitude on the nationalisation of mines, Sir Francis Joseph, in a letter to the North Staffordshire Colliery Owners’ Association, said that although he believes that free enterprise can serve the country best he will endeavour to make the nationalisation of mines effective, even though such a policy tmav be against his own personal interests. “The country desperately needs coal,” he said. “We must demonstrate that we are out to help. No other policy is possible, but the miners’ leaders must also help the nation by doing their utmost to get the men to attend work regularly and do a full week’s work ”
