INVADERS’ RISK

SUICIDE _ATTACKS KAMIKAZE CORPS’ CONTINUING TO FIGHT (11 a.m.) NEW YORK, Aug. 24. 15*9 New York Herald-Tribune's correspondent on Okinawa says that grave doubt continues concerning the ability of Emperor Hirohito to control the more fanatic Japanese, particularly the Kamikaze (air suicide) corps, which could muster a large number of planes and pilots in one last suicidal onslaught against the American occupation forces. The coming operations could therefore be as dangerous as a regular invasion. So far no peace has been signed. All we have is the Emperor’s expressed wish to surrender. The Kamikaze corps, according to the Japanese radio, dropped leaflets on Sunday on Tokio declaring that they are continuing to fight regardless of what the others did. We know so little of enemy psychology that it would be foolish to predict the effect on the Japanese of a possible valiant but insane Kamikaze attack. Tokio admits that chaos with the population is giving way to frenzied fear and despair. Thus there is a danger that ,a Kamikaze attack might reawaken determination to continue the hopeless fight, even though the result might be national suicide.
