V.C. DECORATION BATTLE AGAINST ODDS GALLANTRY" IN BURMA (By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright.) (9 a.m.) LONDON. July 27. Rifleman Lachliiman Gurung, of the Gurkha Rides Regiment of the Indian Army, has received the Victoria Cross. The citation says that at Taungdaw in Burma, on the west bank of the Irrawaddy on the night of May 12-13, though severely wounded, Rifleman Gurung almost lone-handed repulsed many fanatical enemy attacks. He and his comrades were surrounded and cut off for three days and two nights. "His outstanding gallantry and extreme devotion to duty in the face of overwhelming odds were the main factors in the defeat of tire enemy.’’
