LEASES GRANTED U.S.
NEWFOUNDLAND BASES
NEW YORK, July 1
Answering editorial- criticism in the New York Daily News that the United States Government failed to obtain leases for Newfoundland bases when the destroyer exchange deal was arranged, the Under-Secretary of State, Mr. Joseph Grew, stated that the complaint was without foundation as the leases were actually obtained. The arrangements were begun at the time of the negotiations for the exchange of 50 old destroyers, but the Newfoundland lease was not included in it, but was given by Britain later, freely and without consideration. The British had granted a 99-year lease, which was signed on June 14, 1941, and a supplementary lease covering additional areas, including the airfield was signed on July 14. 1942.
