CANADA’S GOVERNOR

NATIONAL SUGGESTED POSSIBLE NOMINEES (11 a.m.) NEW YORK. July 1. The announcement by the Prime Minister, Mr. .W. L. Mackenzie. King that consideration is being-, given to the appointment of a Canadian as a Governor-General has aroused much discussion, says -the New. York Times correspondent in Ottawa. I.t seems likely that a decision will be postponed for several weeks. • The. difficulty appears to be to find the: right man. whether Canadian or British-born,, who can adequately fill the delicate position of. His Majesty’s representative in Canada. In principle there is no objection to a Canadian. but it is argued that, except in ttie case of a very outstanding person. there will always be the suspicion that the appointment has been made on ooliticat grounds, thereby lessening the dignity of the office and, in effect, be a retrogression from the fundamental principle that the representative of the Crown must stand aloof from all political party divisions. • .. ..

Mr. Mackenzie King would like the Earl of Athlone to continue, but he is anxious to return home and has consented to remain only until his successor- is desighated. -Among those mentioned are Lord Burghley, the Hon. David.. Bowes-■-Lyon' and Canada’s . Minister in Britain, Mr. Vincent Massey.
