ECONOMIC HELP

APPEAL BY CHIANG MILITARY "EQUIPMENT CHUNGKING, June 28. Marshal Chiang Kai-Shek, in his first press conference since 1941, said the United Nations were not giving China enough economic help. He urged that more American economic experts be sent to China, and claimed that the Chinese soldiers, given the equipment and training, would defeat the Japanese quicker than foreign troops. Marshal Chiang said: “The United States is giving us _ assistance and equipment and is training our troops, but is giving inadequate attention to our economic difficulties and inadequate assistance to relieve them. _ If the economic situation is not- improved, it will be difficult to make full use of the military equipment.” Referring to the co-operation of the American Ambassador, General Hurley, and General Wedemeyer, Marshal Chiang Kai-Shek said it was the first time in Chinese and American history that co-operation had been so satisfactory. He said he believed that a landing on the Chinese mainland would be necessary to open a pore for supplies to the Chinese forces, even if there was a landing on the Japanese mainland. He estimated that 100,000 puppet Chinese troops w’ere fighting with the Japanese, and predicted that a large number would join the Allies if an invasion occurred.
