BUTCHER FINED
GRADING MARK REMOVED fP.A.) AUCKLAND, June 30. Charges of removing the grading mark from meat other than in handling it, exposing ungraded meat for sale, and selling a forequarter of mutton at an excessive price were admitted by a butchery manager, Hugh Crawford (Mr. Grant), before Mr. F. H. Levien, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court.
For the Department of Industries and Commerce, Mr. deal said that the owner of the shop was overseas on active service and the defendant was only the manager. A forequarter of mutton was purchased by an Mte spector for 3s 2d, whereas the props? price for the meat, which was second grade, was 2s 3d. It bore no grading mark, and the marks were missing from four legs of mutton and five forequarters in the shop. A salesman told the inspector that the mark had been rubbed off, but in any case the meat was sold at 4cl in excess of the price for first grade. Mr. Grant said the defendant was taking full responsibility, but he was only an employee, receiving the award wage. On the charge of removing the' grade mark the defendant was fined £25. For the price breach a fine of £2O was imposed, and on the third! count he was convicted and discharged.
