EMPIRE NEWS SERVICE MEETING WITH BRITONS fP.A.) WELLINGTON, Feb. 10. Discussions on the reorganisation of the external tele-communications system of the British Commonwealth and Empire commenced yesterday in Parliament Buildings between representatives of the United Kingdom and New Zealand Governments. The meeting was opened by the Prime Minister, who extended a warm welcome to Lord Reith and the United Kingdom officials.
Proposals for the reorganisation were discussed at a meeting of the Commonwealth Communications Council in Australia in January, 1943. and again at a meeting in London in May, 1944. following which recommendations were made to the Governments.
“The visit of Lord Reith and the members of his mission,” said the Prim-? Minister, the Rt. Hon. P. Fraser, “is for the purpose of detailed discussions as to how a general scheme of reorganisation can be put into effect.” The members of the United Kingdom mission, in addition to Lord Reith, are Sir Edwin Herbert, Sir Stanley Angwin, Mr. Buckley and Mr. Lewis. The Prime Minister and the Hon. W. Nasli are taking part in the discussions. but the PostmasterGeneral. the Hon. P. C. Webb, is unable to attend because of an indisposition. The New Zealand officials are Mr. J. G. Young, formerly director-general of the Post and Telegraph Department and the New Zealand representative on the Commonwealth Communications Council, Mr. B. C. Ashwin, Secretary to the Treasury, Mr. N. M. Patrick, director-general of the Post and Telegraph Department, Mr. Foss Shanahan, of the Department of External Affairs, and Messrs. Newall, Pike, Green and Curtis, of the Post and Telegraph Department.
