CHARGE OF MURDER HEARINgTt NAPIER GYLES IN THE DOCK (P.A.) NAPIER, Feb. 8. Lower-cour t proceedings against Martin James Eyles, a wharf labourer, charged with the murder at Napier on December 29 of Charles Edmund Swain, a barman-porter, and John Barry Bertram Howe, a 14-year-old boy of Pelmerston North, commenced this morning before Mr. J. Miller, S.M. The accused was also charged with the attempted murder of Thomas Rogers, 64, Detective-Sergeant A. McKenzie and Detective A. Reid, and with having' discharged a missile loaded with destructive material, with intent to go grievous bodily harm to Thelma Alcock. 28. and H. J. Kearney, a retired journalist, 64. a resident of Karori. ...
The list of witnesses lor the prosecution numbers 39. The prosecutor is Mr. T. W. Willis, and accused is represented by Mr. H. W. Dowling. The police depositions are expected to take well into the second day of the healing to complete.
