NEARLY ALL IDLE
WEST COAST MINES (P.A.) GREYMOUTH. Jan. 23 All the mines were idle yesterday through the railway strike, except, the Strongman and Blackball mines, whose employees do not use the railways. Another local development yesterday was that the gas supply was curtailed, making the position serious for hospital and industrial users. The strike committee refused to re lease two trucks of coal to the gasworks.
The Hon. J. O’Brien, Minister of Transport, stated that no extra petrol was available for work for transport purposes or taxis, and says: “There is not. much in the country.” He added that Mr. Semple was not expected to visit the coast to-day. The matter was being dealt with at Wellington. Mr. O’Brien postponed his own departure meanwhile. The engine drivers are standing by their engines but will not work trains carrying non-A.S.R.S. guards.
