IN SHORT SUPPLY
GAS IN AUCKLAND RESTRICTIONS IMPOSED (P.A.) AUCKLAND, Jan. 23. Restrictions in the use of gas were to be applied by the Auckland Gas Company from this morning as a result of the railway strike in Westland. No gas will be available for industrial use. and domestic consumption will be limited to the hours between (i a.m. and 8.30 a.m., 11.30 a.m. and 1.30 p.m., and 4.30 p.m. and 7 p.m. The company has requested the public not to use gas at other limes, even if they find sufficient pressure in the mains.
“Our slocks under normal conditions would, last until Friday nigh l , and there is no prospect of coal reaching Auckland by then.” said the manager of the company, Mr. R. Morley. “Even if the strike were to stop to-day, there is no chance of the first coal ship reaching Auckland before Sunday. With the restrictions in operation the company’s coal stocks will last until Sunday.”
Mr. Morley said that there were no stocks of gas coal in Auckland from which the company could hope to obtain relief.
