POORLY EQUIPPED

JAP, RESERVES ON LUZON FILIPINO "ESPIONAGE (9 a.m.) WASHINGTON, Jan. 21. Filipino guerillas reported that Japanese l'einforcements who landed on Luzon Island before the American invasion on January 9 were so poorly armed that only one-quarter of a regiment of 1600 had rifles and the remainder were equipped with only bamboo spears, said an American liaison officer. The Japanese expected the invasion at least a month before, but they did not know where the Americans were going to land. They moved first one way and then another, mostly on foot because no other transportation was available. The officer added that the Filipinos were so effectively organised that even a handful of Japanese was unable to move without the Filipinos’ knowledge.
