ALARM GRIPS REICH STEADFASTNESS URGED TROOPS’ GRIM PLIGHT (9 a.m.) LONDON, Jan. 22. The note of gloom which has been dominant in German broadcasts in the last few days changed last night to one of hysteria, says the Daily iVTadThere was hardly any attempt, in either the home forces and services’ programmes to hide the state ol alarm through the country. Political and military spokesmen followed-one after another calling on the people and the troops for steadfastness. The forces’ radio suddenly burst forth: •‘Alarm! Alarm! Danger for. East Germany. Everyone’s life is in peril.” A general broadcasting from tne battlefield said: "Our grenadiers are firing to the last cartridge. We know there is no alternative. We are either over-run by the Russians or killed.’ A front-line despatch reported that "local counter-measures are no longer sufficient. We lack improvising.”
