TROUBLE AT BREWERY
MEN IDLE FOR ONE DAY RETURN THIS MORNING After declining to work on Saturday as the result of a dispute regarding the termination of the employment of one of their number, about 20 hands at the Gisborne Brewery, Aberdeen road, resumed work as usual yesterday. The action did not constitute a strike, said a representative of the workers yesterday, as by the terms of the award the working of overtime is obligatory. The manager of the brewery. Mr. E. T. Chrisp, said on Saturday that one of the men .after electing to be put off, expressed a desire to remain in employment at the brewery. Other employees bad then made the condition of their continuing to work the reinstatement of the man. It was stated yesterday by the secretary of the Gisborne Trades Council, Mr. E. Lindlev, that a man had worked during one of the "smokos” provided for in the award and had later stopped to smoke. The brewer objected and the worker replied that his "time could be made up” if what he claimed to be undue interference did not cease.
The dispute was discussed fully by the Trades Council on Saturday afternoon and it was decided to recommend to the workers to resume work pending the matter being referred to a local disputes committee comprising two representatives of tht employers and two of the workers, and an independent chairman. This was agreed to and the committee is lo he set up this week. In the meantime the employee who was the subject of the dispute is not working at the brewerv.
