SERCHIO COLUMN NAZI EXPENDITURE ALLIES MOVE FORWARD (9 a.m.) LONDON. Jan. 2. The Allies are continuing the drive up the Serchio Valley, on the left ilank of the Fifth Army front, and have advanced nearly two miles and captured Sommocolonia, one and analf miles north of Barga, says the Exchange and Telegraph Rome correspondent. Sommocolonia was the first position captured by the enemy in their recent surprise attack. The Allies in the past two days have advanced three and a-hali niles. All territory lost to the enemy is now again in our hands, except for a small area westward of Serchio. The advance is continuing slowly, against scattered resistance. The Germans apparently have run out of supplies after their heavy expenditure on the attack.
Fifth Army troops _ attempted a crossing of the Senio River at Rivola seven miles south-west of Imola, but encountered heavy fire from prepared positions. The Germans in this sector are most sensitive, and are keeping up constant artillery fire.
