FIVE ATTACKS
NAZIS IN ALSACE SEVENTH ARMY ZONE BREAK-THROUGH BID? LONDON, Jan. 1. Five German counter-attacks are now in progress on the Seventh Army .front between Bitche and Niederbronn, says the British United Press correspondent with the Seventh Army. The Germans at dawn to-day launched two new attacks near Damaeli. 1 Reuter’s correspondent says that the scale of these attacks, which has been mounting in the past few days, indicates that the Germans are trying to break through the Seventh Army s front, with reinforcement which have been held in reserve behind the Siegfried Line. The Americans have been compelled to fall back to more protective terrain on the north bank of the Lauter River, where they are now firmly consolidated. The new German counter-attacks are very similar to the beginning of the offensive in the Ardennes and over the same sort of terrain, says the British United Press correspondent at Supreme Allied Headquarters. 'lt, is impossible to determine whether this is another large-scale effort, but the Germans are attacking in greater strength than any time since the beginning of Field Marshal von Rundstedt’s counter-offensive.
