At midnight they formed a large circle in the open and gave a spirited rendering of “Auld Lang Syne” as the town clock chimed for the last time in 1944. Subsequent efforts to make merry bore a decided Scotch flavour, and pipers arrived on the scene in the early morning. Bathers’ Appreciation
The appreciation of many visiting holiday-makers lias been expressed to tiie Waikanae Bench Improvement Society in respect of Hie facilities provided for casual bathing. Tiie society's .receipts also give a reliable indication of the public use of the bathing facilities. Since Christinas Eve, no fewer than 5000 admissions have been paid for. and probably 2000 or 3000 children at least have used the free accommodation-for boys and girls respectively. The number oi camps litis fallen from the peak of 145 established on rfoxing Day to 143 to-day. but parties are still flowing through the camp in substantial numbers, and the season's total of people accommodated in tiie camping area should easily create a record.
