FIFTY-YEARS’ RECORD SHARP EARTH TREMOR in a.m.) LONDON, Jan. L An earthquake in North England shook places as far apart as Manchester and Leeds. The tremor lasted for 45 seconds, and vibrations continued for two minutes. Seismologists describe it as the severest British earthquake for years, it can now be disclosed. London's Christmas was the coldest for over 50 years. The ground temperature fell to 13 degrees Fahrenheit. The cold spell continued for several days, together with thick fog over various parts of the country, causing disorganisation of transport.
