Shock for Rationing Official
A young woman, not prepared to accept anyone’s word that she had to produce her levy book when applying for a ration book, demanded to see the regulations at an issuing office in Christchurch. She was taken to the officer in charge, who was able to satisfy her that this was necessary. The officer was curious to learn why the young woman was so keen to confirm' the powers of rationing officials. He has not yet recovered from the reply he got.* “I’m a student of political science,” said the young woman, “and I’m. studying the growth of dictatorships."
