In giving his judgment, the coroner expressed concern at the number of "comics” describing knife-and-gun play which the boys had in their possession these days. One of the exhibits in the case was a boy’s paper showing a man being held up by another man with a Tommy-gun. This was found by the police in the room where the boys were alleged to have been playing gangsters. In a statement to the police, Clay described how he had shot Graham in the manner depicted in the paper.
