Second-Lieutenant Ernest F. 1. Beer who is reported wounded, is a former member of the Herald staff, having represented the paper m Wairoa. He is the eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Beer, Tolaga Bay, and a grandson of Mrs. A. E. Beer, Gisborne. He enlisted in the early months of the war. and has been abroad since 1941, part ol that tune having been spent in press work on behalf of the N.Z.E.F., He was married in Italy to Miss Dorothy Davys, Wairoa, a member.of the W.A.A.C., their wedding being the first N.Z.E.F. ceremony of the kind celebrated on Italian soil. Mrs. Beer has now returned to New Zealand. The Maori Battalion, Second N.Z.E.i'. has recently suffered further casualties including a number of men from the’Gisborne and East Coast area. I Most of these have been wounded, but one death in action reported is that of Private Henare Potae, Tokomaru Bay. Private Potae was 30 years of age. and a member of a family which from the earliest days of white settlement in the district had been noted for its loyalty. He left for the front in February, 1942, and had seen considerable service in the forward areas. He is a married man with one child. Sergeant K. Kiwha, recently wounded, is 29 years of. age, and was prominent in Gisborne football before proceeding overseas. He entered camp in December, 1942, and also has seen much service in the past two years. He is a married man with two children. Private Hemi Tuhi, a Gisborne Maori also recently wounded, left, for camp in February, 1942. and is 32 years old. lie is a married man with one child. Private Rangi ‘ Atkins, _ Tilutiki. wounded, has been serving since early in 1942, and is 25 years old. He is a single man. Lance-Corporal Sonny Gudgeon, another of the wounded, is a Tikitiki boy. aged 24, and single. He left with the same draft as Private Atkins. Private Puki Horua is another Coast man wounded after nearly three years’ service. He is 2G years of age. and is single. Private Harry Nepe left with the December draft, 1942, and is now wounded. He is 35 years old, and lias a wife and one child. Private N. P. Ngerengere, Tikitiki, also wounded, has beer, abroad only a few months, having left with the latest reinforcement for the Maori Battalion. He is a married man, w'l-mut. ch.i’dron.
Private Abraham B. Parker, Ruatoria. left, for camp in December, 1941, and is 23 years of age. Fie is a single man. the son of Mrs. R. C. Parker, Ruatoria.
